Plastic pallets solve a specific set of problems: cleaning, consistency and long service life. They are not a replacement for timber across the board, but where those three things matter they are usually the cheaper answer over time.
What plastic pallets are good at
The strongest case for plastic is hygiene. A plastic pallet can be washed down and dried, it does not absorb liquid, and it will not leave splinters or loose nails behind. That makes it a common choice in food handling, drinks, pharmaceutical and cleanroom settings, and anywhere an auditor is likely to ask how pallets are cleaned.
The second case is consistency. Every pallet of a given type is the same weight and the same size, which matters when pallets run through conveyors, automated wrappers or weighing systems that dislike variation. The third is life expectancy: a plastic pallet used in a closed loop, going out and coming back, will often outlast several timber equivalents.
Where timber still wins
- One-way deliveries where the pallet will not come back to you.
- Occasional or seasonal use, where the higher unit cost is never recovered.
- Very heavy or sharp-edged loads better suited to a rigid timber deck.
- Jobs where the pallet is being repurposed as material rather than as handling equipment.

Types and what to check
Plastic pallets vary far more than timber ones, so it is worth being specific. The points that usually decide it are the footprint, whether the base is open-deck or solid-deck, whether it is nestable for empty storage or rackable when loaded, the runner or foot arrangement your pallet truck needs, and the rated load for both static and dynamic use.
