Pallets for port and ferry freight businesses

Portsmouth is a working freight city, and a layer of hauliers, forwarders, groupage operators and warehouses has grown up around that traffic. Those are the businesses we supply.

The trade around the freight flow

Goods moving in and out of the city by sea are handled, consolidated, stored and re-dispatched by commercial operators: road hauliers, freight forwarders, groupage and consolidation businesses, customs agents, and third-party warehouses holding stock between legs of a journey.

For all of them the pallet is not the product, it is the unit the product travels in. What matters is that the unit is sound, the right size for the vehicle and the racking, and acceptable to whoever is receiving it at the other end.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

The two failures we hear about most are pallets rejected on arrival because of their condition, and pallets that do not fit efficiently into the space they are loaded into. Both are avoidable at the point of ordering, if the pallet is chosen for the journey rather than for the lowest price.

Consolidated freight in particular punishes inconsistency: a stack of pallets that vary in height or overhang their footprint wastes space on every load. Where you are building loads to fill a deck, it is worth agreeing a standard and sticking to it.

Anything crossing a border

Timber packaging travelling internationally is subject to marking requirements that depend on the destination, and getting it wrong means goods held rather than delivered. We will not guess at this on a website: if your load is leaving the UK, say so when you enquire so it can be checked, and see exportpallets.co.uk in our group, which covers the subject in detail.

For domestic legs, storage and internal movement, good used pallets remain the sensible economy.
